Step 4 – Resources and Tools for your Harambee

HARAMBEE TIP #2
Give a Day would like you to keep the focus of the party simple and clear – an opportunity to educate/update people about HIV/AIDS and encourage the donation of a day’s pay. Other information and fundraising ideas (i.e. silent auctions, raffles etc.) can distract from the message of Give a Day.

The format for your party can go something like this

time for people to arrive and mingle
welcome and introductions from the host
presentation and discussion about Give a Day and HIV/AIDS in Africa (using resources below),
ask your guests to Give a Day’s pay – here or online from their homes in the next day or two,
have some time to make donations, listen to music and further discussions.

Here is a list of resources to help others learn about HIV/AIDS in Africa – please use at least two of these resources at your Harambee. If you are planning to show video, an LCD projector at a venue or your home will make it clear for everyone!

SPEAKERS

Harambees that have 20 or more guests, can request a speaker from Give a Day. Our volunteer speakers are individuals who have personal and professional experience with the impact of HIV/AIDS in Africa and can help with “making the ask” for donations. Speaker request is included in the order form.

HARAMBEE TIP #3
Remember - YOU are a valuable speaker at your event!!

Even though having a speaker can be a great resource, we have found that the most effective and compelling way to get donations is for the host to speak to their friends briefly, and from the heart, about why they think this is an important issue, and why they are making a donation themselves.

MUSIC

Give a Day has produced a great CD of African influenced music from Canadian artists for your Harambee! Everyone who hosts a Harambee will receive a CD. If you would like more CDs to sell at your Harambee, the order form includes that information.

HARAMBEE TIP #4
Here’s a list of items you’ll need for music and video at your Harambee:
1) CD player or laptop with speakers
2) LCD projector (with all the right cords!)
3) Screen or white wall to project video on. Many bars/restaurants may have these items so ask if they’re available to use!
