History of Give a Day
“Give a Day to World AIDS” is a simple and powerful response to the heartbreaking realities of the HIV pandemic. There are 33 million people in the world living with HIV. Extraordinary progress has been made to address the pandemic in recent years. Yet over 5000 people die each day from this infection. Causes and solutions to the pandemic are interwoven with many other global social concerns such as extreme poverty, hunger and gender inequity.

Give a Day (GAD) is a grassroots Canadian response. It challenges each Canadian to recognize World AIDS Day on December 1st by giving one day’s pay to an organization that will use the money well in the fight against HIV. We recommend two excellent organizations as potential recipients - the Stephen Lewis Foundation and Dignitas International.

Here’s some great news about GAD:
To date GAD has raised 2.5 million dollars to assist people affected by HIV
The movement is almost entirely driven by volunteers
GAD is “an act of pragmatic global solidarity” giving Canadians a practical way to express their commitment to health for all
There is an impressive response from the medical and legal communities of the GTA, with at least 12 hospitals and 16 law firms taking on the GAD challenges
GAD effectively informs Canadians about unacceptable global health inequities

Through GAD, communities in Canada mobilize resources for communities far from them and we work together every day towards a world without AIDS.

That’s why the 2010 GAD motto is:
“Global solidarity - Local solutions”
